Postpartum Anxiety Affects Women Everywhere

Becoming a mom is an experience unlike any other. The journey is full of excitement, love, and anticipation, but it can also be marked by a mountain of expectations and an overwhelming sense of pressure. From the moment your baby arrives (and sometimes even before), you’re met with a barrage of well-meaning advice, social media portrayals of “perfect” parenting, and internal voices questioning if you’re doing enough or if you’re doing things “right.”

It’s no wonder so many new moms find themselves feeling stressed, anxious, or completely exhausted. The reality is that the early stages of motherhood are filled with challenges—sleepless nights, new routines, and figuring out how to care for another human being while trying to keep yourself together.

The pressure to be everything at once—a loving, attentive mom, a supportive partner, and perhaps a productive professional —can quickly become overwhelming. The pressure to have it together all the time can drastically impact your emotional wellbeing.

Postpartum therapy for anxiety may be right for you, especially if you can relate to any of the following:

You feel overwhelmed by worry about your baby’s health or safety, even in safe situations.

You experience constant fear of making mistakes or being an inadequate parent.

You have difficulty sleeping, even when your baby is asleep, because your mind is racing.

You feel irritable or on edge most of the time, and small challenges feel insurmountable.

You’re avoiding social interactions and activities you used to enjoy.

You have physical symptoms of anxiety, including restlessness, rapid heartrate, sweating, and shallow breathing, when thinking about parenting tasks.

FAQ:

How do I know if I need to seek support for postpartum anxiety?

While it’s natural to feel some stress as you adjust to parenthood, there are signs that could indicate postpartum anxiety is impacting your life in a way that warrants professional help.

Postpartum anxiety symptoms include persistent and excessive worry, physical signs like restlessness and a racing heartbeat, irritability, racing thoughts, avoidance behaviors, intrusive and distressing thoughts. If these symptoms interfere with your well-being or ability to function, seeking support can be beneficial.

Can I attend sessions in person and online?

Absolutely! You can choose to have in-person therapy in Boca Raton or online. It is based on your own preference. Whether you live in Boca Raton, Delray Reach, Boynton Beach or further away online therapy provides you the flexibility to get the help you need.

Can I use my insurance for postpartum anxiety therapy?

Coverage varies by insurance provider and plan. You can view the list of the providers that Mindful Reflections is in network with here.  If we are not in network with your insurance provider you may still be able to get your sessions covered. Connect with us to learn more.

What can I expect during a postpartum anxiety therapy session?

In postpartum anxiety therapy, you can expect a supportive space where you’ll discuss your experiences, receive validation, and understand your symptoms. Sessions often include learning coping strategies like mindfulness and relaxation techniques, and emotional processing of any significant events through EMDR and Brainspotting. Follow-up sessions provide continued guidance to help manage anxiety and foster confidence in your journey through motherhood.

FAQ:

What To Expect In A Therapy Session For A New Mom

In each postpartum therapy session, you can expect a safe place where you are able to open up and process the stress that comes with motherhood. As your counselor, I’m in your corner and I’ll listen to your perspective and everything you’ve endured.

During your first visit, we talk about the issues you are experiencing and decide the best way to get you where you want to go. Though we will spend a bit of time exploring your symptoms and working to understand where they come from, our primary focus will be on building a future for yourself where life feels more hopeful and motherhood more enjoyable.

Does treatment mean I need medication for postpartum depression or anxiety?

Medication is a viable treatment option, but it’s based in part on individual preference. We will discuss options so that you feel comfortable in whatever treatment you are receiving. Medication is not my specialty, so if that’s something you’d like to try, I will refer you to someone who can help.

How do I know my symptoms are not just the baby blues?

Therapy isn’t just for diagnosable postpartum issues. My focus isn’t your diagnosis, it’s making sure you get the help you need. If you’re a mom who feels like you aren’t at your best, therapy could be beneficial to you. I’d love to understand what you’re struggling with and work with you to overcome the obstacles you’re facing.

Will counseling help me feel like myself again?

I know things seem hard right now. Being a new mom is difficult, and sometimes, it can feel like these overwhelming emotions will never fade—but this isn’t permanent. Don’t let the fear, sadness, and sense of powerlessness stop you from experiencing the positive benefits of therapy. With the right tools and support, you can absolutely feel like yourself again.
